Keeping with tradition, May is a script writing prompt month. Jess and I hit up the old random generator and got our write on. The specifics were:
Name: Tyree / Tari Betz
Occupation: Social and Human Service Assistants
Prop: a broom
Line of dialogue: And I would feel watched all the time
Genre: Chase/Escape film

After running through a couple ideas, we settled on one involving a group of college students stressing out during finals week. Here’s the script we came up with in about two and a half hours:

EXT. AURARIA CAMPUS – DAYTIME

JACOB stands in the courtyard of Auraria Campus. He has a book bag over his shoulder. He shakes a couple pills into his hand and pops them in his mouth as MATT and SARAH walk up.

MATT:

Hey, man.

Jacob surreptitiously hides the pill bottle in his pocket.

JACOB:

What’s up, guys?

MATT:

I just aced my o-chem exam.

JACOB:

Didn’t o-chem have you stressed out?

SARAH:

Study group. You should try it. We’ve got stickers and everything.

Sarah slaps a ladybug sticker on Jacob’s arm as he reaches in his book bag.

JACOB:

Ladybugs? Here’s a copy of my notes from the physics class you missed.

MATT:

Thanks. Since I owe you one, it was a sleep study across campus. You should check it out. It really relaxed me.

JACOB:

Maybe. I’ve got my set theory exam tomorrow.

INT. SLEEP STUDY WAITING AREA – DAYTIME

Jacob walks in. There are several people here sitting in chairs and filling out forms. Jacob hands the SLEEP ASSISTANT a form.

SLEEP ASSISTANT:

You’re Jacob? Living on Cherry Street? 24 years old? In good health? No current medications? Still enrolled?

Jacob nods in response to each question.

SLEEP ASSISTANT:

Great. Follow me this way.

INT. SLEEP STUDY ROOM – DAYTIME

Jacob gets settled into the sleep study bed/chair. He’s in his boxers and a hospital gown type garb.

The assistant puts the sleep monitoring device on his head.

JACOB:

What’s that?

SLEEP ASSISTANT:

This will monitor you while you rest. Nothing to be worried about.

Jacob drifts off into sleep.

INT. DORM HALLWAY – DAYTIME

TARI BETZ knocks on Jacob’s door and waits. The white board on the door reads “Jacob & Matt.” She pulls out her phone and walks away from the door down the hallway.

INT. SLEEP STUDY ROOM – DAYTIME

Jacob’s eyes are closed and moving rapidly. His phone vibrates on a table next to the bed.

EXT. BEACH/MOUNTAIN/SOMEWHERE EXOTIC – DREAM – DAYTIME

The ground is violently shaking as Jacob wakes up in the bed, but on a beach. A broom sticks up out of the sand. He cautiously gets out of bed and feels the sand vibrate around his toes.

A chasm parts under his feet as he jumps back. A huge ladybug emerges from the chasm and advances on a terrified Jacob.

Jacob grabs the broom and jabs and swings at the Ladybug with no effect. The Ladybug grabs for Jacob, but Jacob dodges and runs as fast as possible from the huge Ladybug.

EXT. PARKING LOT – DAYTIME

Tari opens the door to her car, juggling her phone trying to keep it to her ear.

TARI:

Jacob, it’s Tari Betz with social services. You missed your check-in today but I can come back tomorrow. Give me a call.

INT. PSYCH BUILDING – DAYTIME

Jacob runs past the Sleep Assistant’s desk in his boxers.

JACOB:

It’s after me!

The huge ladybug chases Jacob out of the building.

EXT. AURARIA CAMPUS – DAYTIME

Tari sees Jacob running down the street.

TARI:

Jacob!

Jacob ignores her.

TARI:

He is off his meds.

Tari chases after Jacob.

EXT/INT. AURARIA CAMPUS – DAYTIME

Matt is talking on his cell phone.

MATT:

I get it. And I would feel watched all the time.

Matt sees Jacob running down the street.

MATT:

What the hell? Jacob!

Matt drops his coffee and chases after Jacob. Matt looks back and sees Tari running behind him. He runs faster, determined.

JACOB:

It’s coming for me!

Someone opens a shop door and Jacob plows into it, knocking himself out.

Matt runs up and kneels by the unconscious Jacob. Matt tries to wake him up. Tari catches up, out of breath.

TARI:

What is going on? What happened to his clothes?

MATT:

I don’t know. He was at a sleep study. He’s breathing, so that’s good.

TARI:

He missed his appointment today.”

MATT:

Appointment for what?

TARI:

It’s confidential. Let’s get him home.

MATT:

And clothed.

EXT. AURARIA CAMPUS – DAYTIME

Matt walks out of class. Jacob walks up to Matt with a bounce in his step and a smile on his face.

JACOB:

Great idea, doing that sleep study. I totally just aced Set Theory. I owe you one.

MATT:

You have no idea. Do you remember anything from yesterday?

JACOB:

Yeah! I got great sleep!
